The politicization of governance and four other things we learned from the 2025 Corporate Governance Forum

The New York event brought together top governance professionals in an era when change can be quick and new stakeholders are entering the arena

The governance and shareholder services community is mourning the passing of Joseph (Joe) Contorno, a long-time industry executive who passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 27, 2025. He was 79.

Over a career spanning nearly three decades, Contorno was widely regarded as a trusted advisor, mentor and colleague across the proxy advisory and investor relations fields. He most recently served as vice president of sales at The Nuvo Group, a position he had held since 2024.

Before joining The Nuvo Group, Contorno held several senior leadership roles that reflected both his depth of expertise and enduring influence in the industry. He served as managing director at The Altman Group from 2002 to 2010, then as senior managing director and cofounder at Eagle Rock Proxy Advisors from 2010 to 2014, followed by a decade as senior vice president at Laurel Hill Advisory Group from 2014 to 2024. Earlier in his career, he also held executive positions with Georgeson and DF King.

In announcing the formation of Eagle Rock in September 2010, Contorno observed: ‘Investors are becoming more active and are starting to cast their eye at smaller companies which opens up the mid- to small-cap market. These corporate issuers will need help, and not just on the proxy side.’ That forward-looking view underscored his belief that evolving capital markets and investor activism would demand broader advisory services and creative governance responses.

‘Joe’s passing was sudden and very unexpected,’ said Tony Barletta, managing partner at The Nuvo Group. ‘He was energetic and pleasant to work with, always in good spirits and a true gentleman. He was eager to help in any way possible.’

Barletta noted that Contorno’s enthusiasm and commitment left a lasting impact on both his colleagues and the organization. ‘His dedication was evident in everything he did,’ Barletta said. ‘Joe was deeply involved in our weekly calls and at conferences, contributing to strategic planning and helping the team reach new customers.’

Joseph (Joe) Contorno

Beyond his professional expertise, Contorno’s influence on company culture was equally significant. ‘Joe showed that at any age he was capable of working hard and learning,’ Barletta added. ‘He loved what he did and enjoyed connecting with people. Even though he was part of our sales team, he contributed valuable knowledge of proxy, SPACs and shareholder services to both our team and our clients.’

Reflecting personally, Barletta said, ‘My fondest memories of Joe will always be our conversations– discussing current events, past work environments, his love of music and his family. Joe had a wealth of knowledge and was a gifted storyteller. I always told him he needed to write a book and share his life with the world.’

Barletta jokes that it was not until Contorno started working with him that ‘Joe discovered what LinkedIn was’ and it opened a world new connections and opportunities.

Outside of his professional life, Contorno’s lifelong passion for music shaped much of who he was. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1946, he proudly embraced his Italian heritage and his Brooklyn roots. With a close friend, he turned a shared love of Doo Wop music into a successful 25-year endeavor promoting shows at Radio City Music Hall and The Beacon Theatre. In 2022, he and his collaborators were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into The East Coast Music Hall of Fame, joining artists such as Tony Orlando, Dionne Warwick and Neil Sedaka.

Contorno is survived by his wife Marylou Panza, his children Stefan and Julia, his grandchildren Jenna and Tyler, and a large extended family.

Colleagues and peers remember him as a consummate professional whose combination of deep industry knowledge, enthusiasm and warmth will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
